Trying is onyly emphasizing the thing we know already.
Change involves carrying out an activity against the habit of life.
There is no such thing as a right position, but there is such a thing as a right direction.
FM Alexander
The Fellside Development Course provides a unique opportunity to explore the Alexander Technique
in depth. The Technique is the main vehicle of the Development Course, underlying every aspect
of the course. Much of the considerable experience and ways of communicating the Technique at
Fellside is employed.
Working deeply with the Alexander Technique forces us to revise our idea of ourselves and
therefore how we experience the world. On this development courses we do this in a safe and
supportive environment. The Alexander Technique is developed with teachers hands-on contact and
there will be voice, movement, Living Alexander Anatomy, Individual sessions and other
activities. It is an opportunity to develop more choice about our responses and more congruency in our expression.
Teachers
The teachers on the course will be Alexander Teachers who are associated with the Fellside
School and the coordinating teacher will be Michael Hardwicke.
Michael Hardwicke has been part of the Alexander School since
it began in 1985 and is co-director of the teacher training programme.
Dates: July 26th and 27th 2008
Cost: The cost for the whole weekend will be £90.
Deposit to reserve a place is £25 (cheques to: Development Course).
Location: Fellside Alexander School is situated in a 19th Century building with panoramic
views over the medieval market town of Kendal, surrounded by the hills of the English Lake
District.

A Journey of Personal Growth and Discovery
Explore The Alexander Technique
where mind and body meet – consciously
The standard Alexander Teacher Training is of three years duration, leading to formal qualification and membership of the
Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT).
However, at New Directions we recognise that some people may wish to pursue Alexander studies more on the basis of
personal development and to bring the Technique more fully into their lives, than to become an Alexander Teacher.
The first year of the New Directions Alexander Technique Training Course, which can be described as a Foundation in
Alexander Studies can be seen as an ideal experience for such people.
Concentrating as it does on work on the Self and the core principles of the Alexander Technique, this Foundation Year
provides the perfect vehicle for self discovery and applies both to the individuals who wish to extend their experience of
the Technique beyond the point they can achieve by private lessons, and also to the teacher trainee.
Under the guidance of highly experienced tutors we offer the opportunity to practise using this Technique for Change by
encouraging:
- non-judgmental self-awareness
- non-judgmental observation of others and
- living in the present moment, the Alexander Interface - the place where change is possible, as applied to:
- “outer activity” – so-called ‘physical activities’, the minutiae of daily life, (such as walking, sitting, bending,
making a cup of tea), any specialised activity or hobby you already do, (singing, riding, playing an instrument/sport or
art activity) and the learning of new skills too, and
- “inner activity”- your own thought processes which underlie your “outer activities”
We will explore:
- how intention drives activity.
- how the tool of conscious, constructive thinking can be used to challenge, reassess and change the habits of a
lifetime.
- how to bring poise and choice into every moment of our life, and improve our chosen activities.
- how the way we use ourselves contributes to health and well-being (or their opposites).
- how ‘feelings’, both physical and emotional are intimately connected.
- how to return to ‘neutral’ in our life, both in busy times and as a form of relaxation.
- how Alexander’s discoveries and principles are underpinned by modern knowledge of anatomy, physiology and
body-mechanics.
Upon satisfactory completion of the Foundation Year Journey of Growth and Development Course, students will receive a
Certificate of Completion. If students wish to continue the teacher training course, they can enter the second year of
training immediately, or at a later stage (subject to certain criteria).
Note:
The practice developed by FM Alexander of teaching through direct hand contact is known as ‘hands-on’. In line with the
tradition of Alexander training and the policy of many other STAT recognised training courses, students do not generally
do ‘hands-on’ work on other people during the first year. Students learn to improve their own use and stay neutral in the
face of strong habitual drives to "get things done" or try and change things directly.
You are not here to do exercises or to learn to do something right, but to get able to meet a stimulus that always puts you
wrong and learn how to deal with it.

Five-day Summer Holiday Course
in the Lake District
at Fellside Alexander School, Kendal, Cumbria
with Michael Hardwicke et al
August 13th to August 18th 2008
The first session begins at 5.30pm on the first day
and the course ends at lunchtime on the last day
Course Description
The course provides an opportunity to explore how the
Alexander Technique can help us find an easier, more
free and effective way of going about our lives.
The course works well as an introduction to the
Technique and a good refresher for those already
involved in this approach to life. The course will
use a variety of approaches to understand
the principles of the Technique and how we can
integrate them into our lives. An important feature
of the course is to give a clear understanding of our
structure. This more accurate body sense makes it
a lot easier to assimilate and apply the Technique.
Each participant will receive two individual sessions.
The approach is practical,
experiential and related to everyday life.
Alexander Technique
FM Alexander discovered a practical and enhancing way
of coordinating body and mind in all activities. By
consciously directing the way we move instead
of relying on habit we can change the way we
use our muscular system and avoid strain,
tension and fatigue. Practising the
Alexander Technique brings more
efficiency to our movements, an expansion
of our attention and gives us a basic principle
that we can apply to many areas of our lives.

Fellside Alexander School is situated in a 19th Century building with
