Alexander Technique for Children
and in Education

One-to-one lessons for children

Children have one-to-one Alexander lessons for many of the same reasons as adults. In addition, the Technique has been found useful in the management of growth-related problems such as scoliosis and Scheuermann's disease, and simply helping children to feel more comfortable during periods of rapid growth.

Children who are musicians or involved with disciplines such as horse riding or dancing may also find the technique helpful in developing their skills.

I'm a wind player and also enjoy singing. I followed a course in Alexander Technique to help me learn how to breathe properly. The Technique has helped me so much more than just this. All aspects of my playing and singing have improved - posture, breathing, phrasing, sound and performance. I'd recommend the Technique to any musician.
School student, aged 15

Most children respond very well to the Alexnader Technique and actively enjoy the gentle and safe hands-on work received from an Alexander teacher. Teachers will encourage parents and guardians to observe and participate in their child's lessons, although teenagers are often more comfortable without a parent present.

The Alexander Technique in education

The Alexander technique has been described as learning how to learn; FM Alexander always hoped that the long-term influence of his work would be in education. Increasingly, Alexander teachers are being invited into schools to teach in a variety of situations, from one-off health awareness workshops to ongoing one-to-one lessons in school music departments.

One school, the Educare Small School in Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey, with Alexender teachers Sue Merry and Judith Kleinman, has done pioneering work for more than ten years, bringing the principles of the Alexander Technique into every part of the school day.

You can visit the school's website at: www.educaresmallschool.org.uk

As one goes on [with Alexander lessons], new areas are opened, new possibilities are seen and then realised; one finds himself continually growing, and realises that there is an endless process of growth initiated.
Professor John Dewey, American educational philosopher, 1859-1952
